Raising awareness for men’s health

Kā piti Deputy is growing a moustache for a good cause.

- Lawrence Kirby Kā piti Deputy Mayor

Health, especially men’s health, has been the month’s theme for me. I lost a friend to prostate cancer and have two others fighting it. Also, I know of two men in their 40s who have taken their own lives recently. These are issues that are real - they impact families and whā nau in our community every day. As a community, we need to be aware of them and encourage our men to look after themselves!

In response to these issues, a group of guys I know decided to participate in Movember. Movember is an initiative designed to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues like prostate and testicular cancer, alongside the sometimes hidden issue of mental health. As the name suggests, it primarily focuses on men growing a moustache during the month of November. If you’d like to support us, head to https:/ /movember.com/m/15081403 or scan the QR code.

The Mary Potter Hospice Strawberry Festival was held over the weekend, and Kā piti turned on a beautiful day. It was brilliant to see so many people out supporting the great cause that is Mary Potter Hospice.

They provide the primary means of palliative care across the

Wellington region, and it’s free. They do this through donations they receive from the public to subsidise the money they receive from the Government. I have seen first-hand the amazing work the people of Mary Potter Hospice.

Kā piti Coast District Council is continuing to invite your input into our long-term vision work, Vision Kā piti. We are hosting drop-in sessions across our district – they’ll be in the Rimu Rd council offices until this Friday, November 24.

Come along and have your say!
