Spring is time for some home maintenance

- Writes Kem Ormond

Spring is finally in sight, which means there are some home maintenance tasks you need to manage.

Winter weather can be brutal on your house, and it is important you take time to inspect various parts of your home to assess any damage and make necessary repairs.

I have started cleaning out my guttering. . . ugh! . . . how I detest that job. It has not been done since

Cyclone Gabrielle, so it was quite a job. Also have started on a bit of water blasting as continuous rain has meant a lot of the plasterwork had a slight green tinge.

Check out your down pipes as they get dirty during winter as well.

I also water blasted my outside table and chairs, and they certainly look so much better for it. Cedar doors

If you have wooden outside doors, cedar, or such like, once the weather warms up, they need to be revitalised with some sort of oil…once the heat of summer comes it is too hard to apply as dries too quickly.

Paths, decks, and walkways.

A water blaster is a great investment, and the difference it makes to your paths, driveways, and walkways is amazing. Greasy, damp and mould ridden paths are a hazard. Windows

Check and clean your windows inside and out. Especially if single glazed, as all that window moisture means a build-up of damp in the corners of your windows. Check for any rot and repair. Outside lighting

Check all your security lighting and replace any bulbs that need changing, plus give them a good clean as well. Fences

A rundown fence can be such an eyesore—for both you and your neighbour. Spruce up your fence by raking leaves and other debris away from the base and then hosing or scrubbing off any mud. Touch up wooden fences as needed with fresh paint or sealant. You will be surprised by the difference it will make.

Outdoor entertaining area and the BBQ

Watch out when you lift that lid of the barbecue . . .. there is every chance there will be an unwanted visitor, namely a cockroach!

Now is the time for a good clean of your grill, barbecue, and any outdoor cooking appliance. Then roll-on summer and all those wonderful meals you will be able to have with family and friends.

You need, hot soapy water, a good scrubbing brush and plenty of elbow grease. Do not forget your garage

While you are working your way around the outside of your house, do not forget your garage. Take any unused sport equipment off to the thrift shop or give to friend’s children that will enjoy them. Then, sweep the floors, wipe all the shelving units, knock down cobwebs, and give garage door springs and hinges a light touch of oil to keep them working smoothly and silently.

Give the windows a good clean and declutter, declutter, declutter!
