Local history goes on display

- Mayoral Musings JANET HOLBOROW Kāpiti District Mayor

Ihope everyone is having a wonderful Kā piti summer, and for those still on holiday, I hope the rest of your break is safe and enjoyable.

It’s been great to see so many enjoying our open spaces and beaches. We have had some water-related incidents, so please stay safe in the water and swim between the flags where possible.

Last week I attended the launch of Where is Pouawha, which is on at the Gillian and Frederick Dean Gallery at Paraparaumu Library until January 22. The project was inspired by a mural in the Paekā kā riki Station carpark by Rachel Benefield and local tamariki, commissioned by the Station Museum, reflecting local history in a series of large images.

Paekā kā riki resident Dennis Rose was curious about Pouawha, a place mentioned in the art works, and was inspired to find out more about it. After two years of research he’s created a significant

installation incorporating the wider history of the area.

The display includes early military records and maps from the 1840s, images, video and information boards. There’s such a wealth of information, it’s worth taking some time to read, look and digest.

On a less positive note, work will soon start on the Waikanae Bridge clip-on. This is a NZTA Waka Kotahi project, and the contract is directly with them. While the finished product will be a great addition to our cycling and walking network, it will necessarily involve some months of significant disruption.

The current plan is a southbound closure for the period of the works, with a

detour along Te Moana Road and along the Expressway.

We are working to see if a better solution can be achieved, and I’ve been urgently working with those living immediately south of the bridge to try to address their particular needs. We’ll be continuing to work as hard as we can to advocate on behalf of the community to minimise the impacts.

That aside, 2024 is looking to be a busy and productive year as we plan for our future and continue work on important projects.

Please do get in touch with any concerns or ideas. Janet. holborow@kapiticoast. govt.nz.
