New concert season announced

Waikanae Music Society opens season in February

-

The Waikanae Music Society’s next season will open next month and includes keyboard music, as well as some of the country’s finest pianists, and some outstanding visitors from overseas.

The season will open on February 11 with a solo and duo concert from renowned Hungarian pianists De´nes Va´rjon and Izabella Simon, who are visiting New Zealand as star attractions at the Nelson Chamber Music Festival. They will be performing Beethoven, Liszt, Bartok and Mahler.

Later, on March 23, New Zealand’s own Michael Houstoun will return to play works by Bach, Liszt, Gao Ping and Chopin. Then, in April string players from the NZSO take the stage to perform string quintets by Mozart and Brahms.

Two well-known pianists will feature in June and in August, each as part of an instrumental duo.

Jian Liu will team up with NZSO principal cellist Andrew Joyce in June and in August Michael Endres joins violinist Mark Menzies in music by Mozart, Schubert and Richard Strauss.

Between those two duo concerts will be a piano recital from a New Zealander who has long been absent from these shores. Henry Wong Doe left to study abroad after winning virtually every available competition in New Zealand.

He has made an international name for himself, winning both the

Sydney and Arthur Rubinstein piano competitions, performing and recording worldwide and is now based in the United States where he is professor of piano studies at Indiana University. In July he is making his Back in New Zealand Tour, which will include a return to Waikanae.

In September there will be an organ recital from well-known concert organist Martin Setchell. He will be playing a Johannes Vivaldi organ which will be specially moved into the hall for the occasion.

Finally, in October the Wellingtonbased

Ghost Trio (violinist Monique Lapins, cellist Ken Ichinose and pianist Gabriella Glapska) will entertain with piano trios including works by Schumann and Ravel.

All concerts will be held in the Waikanae Memorial Hall.
