Exploring Kā piti
The benefits of hosting an international exchange student
In an increasingly interconnected world, the opportunity to host an international exchange student has become a rewarding and enriching experience for families, couples and retired singles throughout Kāpiti.
“Beyond the initial excitement of welcoming someone from a different culture into your home, the benefits extend far beyond the duration of their stay,” Kāpiti College international department co-director Steve Burt said.
“From fostering cultural understanding to creating lifelong connections, hosting an international exchange student can be a transformative experience for both the host and the student.”
Gytha McBride decided to host an exchange student as an opportunity for some company and additional income.
Gytha, who has been retired for some time and lives on her own, didn’t feel the need for a long-term roommate or boarder, but liked the idea of having someone from another country to share her home with for six months.
In July, she welcomed Mila Thiele, of Germany, into her home and it was an enriching experience.
Mila gained a host mother who had the time on her hands to show her the local sights and help her adjust to life as a student at Kāpiti College.
In return, Gytha said she loved learning about Mila’s home and culture, and she said it was lovely to have some company at home in the evenings.
Gytha also found the experience led her to re-explore Kāpiti and its surroundings and visit places she had not been to or hadn’t visited for a long time. “It was great to see these through Mila’s eyes and gain a new appreciation for the place she calls home.”
Co-director Paul Western said, “The extra income from hosting also allowed Gytha to get some work done to her home which was the icing on the cake.
“Many people think to host an international exchange student you need to be a family to give them the authentic Kiwi experience.
“However, many students enjoy being hosted by retired couples or singles as they enjoy a quieter home experience.
“Hosting an international exchange student is a richly rewarding experience that goes beyond providing a temporary home.”
