Kapiti Calling

- By Jason Burrows

In 2020 locked down in our Ventura home, my business temporarily closed, and with Daryn, my wife, burnt out from working insane hours in the Santa Barbara covid ICU, our family made the decision to return home to New Zealand from Los Angeles.

We packed up our busy lives and flew home with our then two-year-old Daughter, Aella and the family dog, Boris.

Arriving in Auckland we were shipped to Christchurch to spend two weeks quarantined in a hotel with our two-yearold. A dream come true! Aella enjoyed MIQ immensely, she had her first taste of NZ milk commenting “ah this is some good milk” and on our last day experienced her first lollypop, given to her by the MIQ staff, after suffering through daily nose swabs. Having never seen a lolly pop before, she promptly turned it around and stuck the white stick in her nose.

Having the support of family and friends and with the imminent opening of transmission gully it was the obvious choice to move home to Kapiti, where I was originally raised.

After an absence from the coast for over 25 years (outside of the occasional visit) it’s been amazing to bring my family back to the relaxed lifestyle here, and wonderful to watch my daughter thrive in the freedom and safety of our new life. After being back for two years we are still adjusting but thrilled to be a part of the community again. Daryn works in the ICU at the Hutt hospital and Aella continues to make us chuckle with her new kiwi accent. If we ever miss the hustle and bustle of Los Angles we simply sit in traffic on Kapiti Road, to remind us of why we left.

As for myself,

I enjoy bumping into familiar faces from a lifetime ago and find good memoires around every corner, recently joining the team at Howard & Co, just down the road from my first primary School. I’m thrilled to join an experienced and team driven real estate group and look forward to continuing to re-introduce myself along with my family to what is now our new home.
