Paekakariki School

- Julia Bevin

I am proud to be tumuāki (principal) of Paekākāriki School – Home of the Barefoot Learner, where education embraces a holistic approach that nurtures the mind, body, and spirit of every child. Our unique philosophy embodies the essence of learning as a journey that extends beyond the classroom, fostering a love for exploration, discovery, and self-discovery. At Paekākāriki School, we understand that education goes beyond a prescribed curriculum and standardised tests. Our commitment is to cultivate Barefoot Learners – students who engage with(in) the world with curiosity, resilience, and a deep connection to the environment and people around them. The metaphor of barefoot learning symbolises our dedication to grounding education in real-life experiences, allowing students to feel the earth beneath their feet as they walk their educational path. Our holistic approach encompasses not only academic excellence but also the well-being of each student. We recognise that a balanced and supportive environment contributes to a child’s overall success. The Barefoot Learner philosophy emphasises the importance of play, movement, and nature in enhancing student well-being, fostering a sense of self, and promoting academic achievement.

Our kura (school) is a reflection of the diverse and inclusive nature of Paekākāriki. We celebrate the richness that comes with the unique backgrounds, talents, and perspectives of our students, whānau, and staff. By recognising and valuing individual strengths, we create a dynamic and supportive environment that encourages each child to thrive.

As the Home of the Barefoot Learner, we provide a range of learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. From our hands-on, student-centred, innovative curriculum, integrating Te Ao Māori values and Te reo Māori, Paekākāriki School strives to create an environment where education is a happy and transformative experience.

Paekākāriki School – where holistic education takes root and grows, shaping the leaders and learners of tomorrow.
