Now is the time to join club!

- Writes Kem Ormond OPINION

Whether it is art, swimming, pottery, bowls, tennis, orienteering or even Pilates. . . if fact any activity, you are never too old to join a club.

A friend has just taken up dancing and I have taken up watercolour painting. We can’t believe how much enjoyment we are getting from our chosen activities and wonder why we have left it this long!

Joining a club is an opportunity to turn interests into friendships.

Usually, you can find notices for various clubs in your local library, online or even on the noticeboard at your local supermarket.

Joining a club is an opportunity to learn a new skill and if you are anything like me you will end up getting involved boots and all. I started with some art paper, paints, and a few brushes.

Now I have a library of ripped out ideas from magazines, a selection of how to paint books, brushes galore, easels. . . even a dedicated painting shirt and when I sit and paint, I am transported to a whole different place. It is just a peaceful time to truly indulge oneself. You may be lucky enough to have some community education classes being run in your town. These classes are usually diverse, so you are sure to find something of interest among them.

I know friends who have organised dinner clubs, wine clubs, walking groups, running groups and some who have sessions in their homes to teach their older friends mobile phone technology.

Whether young or old, active or non-active, you are sure to find a club or group that will interest you. Autumn is approaching, so how about meeting some like-minded people and enjoy some new activities.

Not only will you enjoy the company and the routine, but it is also so good for your wellbeing.
