Youth urged to link with employers
Work Ready Kā piti to hold first meeting of the year
Work Ready Kāpiti will be holding its first employer meet of the year in partnership with Kāpiti Youth Support, and encourages young people aged 15-24 to attend.
An employer meet is a speedmeet-style event that allows young people to learn about various industries, practise their interview skills, and have the opportunity to forge valuable connections with local employers.
Work Ready Kāpiti and Kāpiti Youth Support are encouraging all local young people to get involved and give it a go.
The programme has had great success over the years, providing young people with the opportunity to explore employment pathways within their community, and promises to be informative and empowering for those who attend.
Previous employer meet attendee Lily Ness said her favourite thing about an employer meet was “how comfortable and straightforward they are, which makes it so enjoyable and easy to talk about something you care about”.
She said her favourite piece of advice she would give to young people planning on attending the event was to ask anything, prepare questions if there’s something you’re really curious about, and to also take a look at what all the employers do before you go — “you might find an interest in something you didn’t even know about”.
Local employer Shelby Bothamley, of Brian Perry Civil, said her favourite part of the event was meeting young people, telling them her work stories, and “seeing their eyes light up with interest”. Her advice to young people attending the event was to practise making connections with people by introducing themselves using eye contact and a firm handshake, even though it might feel scary.
This is the second year that Work
Ready Kāpiti has partnered with Kāpiti Youth Support to deliver the event, and both charities share a passion for supporting young people in the community.
Kāpiti Youth Support provides young people with free health, mental health, and social services including supporting them into work.
