Why not hold an Informal Farewell

“Nice Shorts and Clean Jandals"

- By Andrew Malcolm - Managing Director

“I don’t want a fuss when I’m gone”

we commonly hear when talking with people about their final farewell. We all know a funeral, a final farewell, is not for us but for those left behind to help them grieve. Often this fact of being for those left behind is forgotten when planning a funeral, and feedback from the Loss and Grief Centre Kapiti about those struggling with the grief journey is often from people whose loved one, had no funeral or farewell or from those who felt the farewell wasn’t reflective of the person's life, so.. why not take this problem away and have an informal farewell. Arranging things at your own venue can be stressful, so using one of our venues, and being able to just walk in and walk out, helps to take away that stress.

These Informal Farewells are becoming more and more popular, and can often mean less money, less stress and less formality

Recently a family came to me and asked if they could just gather for an informal farewell at our Kapiti Crematorium facility at the Awa Tapu cemetery, which has beautiful views down the Awa Tapu Valley out to the ocean and just come casually in shorts and jandals. “We will make sure they are clean shorts and our best jandals” was said, and… that’s precisely what they did. We gathered together and I helped them talk about the one they had come to remember. We played the music he loved focused around pictures of his life and they said their final goodbyes through stories, laughter and a few tears. It was a lovely farewell.

These types of farewells are becoming more popular, instead of the traditional formal farewells, though both have their merits.

Informal Farewells need not be expensive, and with this, in mind, we have developed a package deal for those that wish to prepay for this type of send off. Please visit our web site www.kapitifuneral.nz for more details or ring our office to make a time to talk with one of our helpful staff. Nice shorts and clean Jandals, for

them a fitting ‘Informal Farewell’.
