The precious Stewart family bible which has been with the family since the early 1800s is now on display in the drawing room at Athenree Homestead.

Cecilia Isabella Stewart (sister of Hugh Stewart) who was the original owner of the bible, came to New Zealand on the vessel Lady Jocelyn, along with Hugh and Adela Stewart in 1878.

Cecilia was married to Captain Mervyn Stewart’s son, George Vesey Stewart.

Cecilia’s daughter Georgina Stewart married Norman Wilson and had a son, Lawrence Stewart Wilson (who is still alive and living in Gore) and it is their family who have kindly donated the bible to Athenree Homestead.

Well-known local lawyer Kit Robbins has made a beautiful wooden case to display the bible and to protect it from deteriorating. The bible is now on display in the drawing room at Athenree Homestead.
