Singer shares her skill

Singer Lavina Williams recently spent two days at Katikati College mentoring the college’s music students as part of the NZ Music Mentoring programme.

Lavina is a former member of the top New Zealand girl group in the 90s, Ma-V-Elle (with Marina Davis and Maybelle Galuvao), which turned out hit songs. Among these were Depend On Me, Never Say Goodbye, On and On and Freedom Head of Arts, Wendy Fleming said the college was lucky this year to be accepted to be part of the NZ Music Mentoring programme.

New Zealand born Lavina is of Samoan and Fijian descent, and is the eldest of a super musical family. Her brother is top of the charts music artist, J. Williams and sister, Emily Williams was placed second in Australian Idol in 2005.

Her little sister, Ezra, is also an emerging musical talent.

The singer/songwriter toured the world from age 16 with Ma-VElle. The popular trio formed the group after meeting at school in South Auckland. They recorded two RnB/soul albums, Spoken To and Ma’V’Elle, and supported top female singers such as Tina Turner, Macy Grey, BoneyMand B’witched.

During amini tour in France Lavina secured the lead role in the Broadway musical Hairspray at Auckland’s Skycity Theatre in 2014.

She has also worked as a backing vocalist with Kiwi artists Ginny Blackmore and Stan Walker.
