GOLF

Katikati Nine Hole - Conditions on the morning of May 18 were not the best for high scoring golf for the 9-hole vets at Fairview. The competition was four clubs only, with gusty wind and some rain making the game challenging, but it still was enjoyed by 11 players. First place was Barry Winning, 2nd was Ross Chambers and 3rd equal was Peter Bartlett and Stewart Couper.

18-Hole — A frosty morning on Tuesday, May 23 kept a few golfers away from the 18-hole ladies stableford competition, but those who did come recorded some good scores. The stableford was won by Alison Kennard 40, followed by Lesley Rayner 38, Sandra Wheeler 37, Jill Chambers 36. The only two of the day — Faye North.

Veterans - Last Thursday, May 25, the Fairview 9-hole vets combined with the 9 hole and some of the 18 hole ladies. A beautiful sunny morning with well-dressed greens saw some very good golf and scores. Mixed pairs played a Canadian fours competition. Resutls: 1st Laurie Harris and Jan Nicol, 2nd Stewart Couper and Sandra Hurley, 3rd Geoff and Judy Harden.

Waihi Mens - The regular golf programme took a break for the Greenkeepers’ Revenge this weekend. However there were a few important matches in the Flett Trophy that needed to be completed. Monday saw David Gear and Tim Parish resume their contest with David standing 2 up. The match remained tight and they stood on the 18th tee all square. A solid par on the last was enough to see Tim Parish through. The remaining two matches between Andy Roche and David Lockton and Brian Robinson and Bob Baunton were played in perfect conditions on Thursday. Brian Robinson preserved his lead on Bob Baunton in their resumed battle, winning on the 18th and Andy Roche survived some early pressure from David Lockton to win 3 and 2. Thus the quarter final matches for this Saturday, June 3 are: Andy Roche v Tim Parish, Brian Robinson v Mark Hume, Wilson McGillivray v Philip Caldwell, Nigel Sanderson v Don Oliver.
