Players soldier on

- By NAN HOGGARD

If they wish to play golf, women who are employed during the week have little option but to play in weekends.

On Saturday, May 20 the forecast was for unpleasant weather, and although it was cold to start with, no one was prepared for the atrocious conditions that rapidly developed— gale-force winds, heavy rain and hail.

Some people not involved in matches before long abandoned their haggle, two bailing out after six holes, and the others pressing on to 12 holes before opting out.

But the matches that were scheduled to be played could not be deferred for various reasons— there were no other days available to play within the competitions’ specified times and so they soldiered on.

Results: Haszard Cup semifinal: Rae Wright b Jacquie Bain on the 17th hole, and will play Jackie Robson in the final on June 3.

Fourball Best Ball first round: Michelle Libby and Phillipa Harvey b Shoneen Dunning and Kathy Ashton on the 17th hole; Robin Zinzan and Robyn Kirby b Wendy Matutinovich and Heather Walker on the 17th hole.

On Wednesday, May 24 ladies’ captain Jacquie Bain welcome 25 players from Hunterville’s Rangatira Club, away on their Mystery Trip tour, and invited them to join in the day’s stableford competition, thereby increasing the field to 60. It was pleasing to see some visiting players featuring in the prize list, as some found Waihi more challenging than their mostly flat home course with much smaller greens.

Stableford results: Maureen Murray 43 points; Sally Sherson (Taumaranui), Avon Gordon 39; Adrienne Lynch, Marie Rickard, Shoneen Dunning 36. Twos: Sharlene Stewart on No 15. Player of the Week: Maureen Murray 65.

Veteran golfers captain Judy Borchard congratulated the Men’s Pennant team for their unprecedented win at the Waikato District Veteran Golfers’ Association Pennant final played at Morrinsville on May 16, saying David Gear, Ken Purcell, Maurice Joyce, Norm Sanderson, Alan Sarjant and Tim Parish have every reason to be very proud of their achievement. She also thanked Peter Maria, Graham Jenkins and Bill Newland for playing their part by stepping into the breach when needed as reserves in other pennant rounds leading up to the final.

Last but not least, former team coordinator Errol Millar said team captain David Gear’s enthusiasm and encouragement for the team to play well throughout the series could have been the secret ingredient that inspired his men to believe that losing was not an option, and thanked him for his excellent management in bringing home the magnificent trophy.

There were 58 golfers waiting to play a par competition on a very cold frosty morning on Monday, May 22, but a glorious sunny day soon thawed the frost, and there was very little delay in starting from three tees to play a par competition.

Results on par— Ladies: Noelene Deverill , Karen Lee, Viv Gunn 1 up; Penny Joyce all square. Men: Denis Borman 5 up; Roger Stiles, Tom Wallace 4 up; Tony Gallaugher, Graham Walford 3 up. Twos: Tim Parish on N° 6. Weasels (chipping in to the hole from outside the green): Denis Borman, Eugene Elliott, Tom Wallace, John Purkis.

Nine hole golfers had a delayed start on Tuesday, May 23 due to a very heavy frost, but it soon developed into a beautiful sunny day to play nett and stableford competitions.
