Saxophonist to play in free city concert

-

Michael Jamieson is the stunning saxophone soloist in a free concert featuring music from some of the most iconic of 20th century composers.

Though it’s been around for 200 years, the saxophone is not often associated with classical music, and doesn’t normally feature in the orchestra. When needed by the Auckland Philharmonia or NZ Symphony Orchestra, Michael is often called on, as one of the top saxophonists in the country.

As a solo instrument the saxophone is even less developed. In this concert Michael will join Bay of Plenty Symphonia in two of the better known pieces for saxophone and orchestra— Villa-Lobos’ spirited Fantasia and Debussy’s Rapsodie.

These contrasting pieces— Brazilian fire versus French impressionism— will showcase two different saxophones, the soprano and the more established alto saxophone respectively.

The programme will also feature two orchestral works. Janacek’s suite from the opera, The Cunning Little Vixen, has been specially arranged for this concert by the symphonia’s music director, Justus Rozemond. Arguably a forerunner to Bambi and The Lion King, this opera tracks the life and death of the vixen and contains music of much beauty. Kurt Weill’s 2nd Symphony completes the programme. Weill is mainly known for his Berlin cabaret music such as The Threepenny Opera and his American Show music. If you like his Berlin music, you’ll definitely like this, as it’s written in the same melancholy, yet lyrical style.

This is a free concert but as capacity is limited, the symphonia recommends people get their free tickets in advance to make sure of a seat. Free tickets are available at Katikati Information Centre and there will be a limited number at the door on concert day. Ticket holders should come in good time as there will be open entry for non-ticket holders from 2.45pm.

Donations will be welcome.

Conducted by Justus Rozemond with guest soloist Michael Jamieson.

Free concert (saxophone) Sunday, June 18, 3pm; ticket holders should be seated by 2.45pm at St Mary Immaculate Church, corner Cameron Rd and Elizabeth St, Tauranga.
