- By JULIET DUNLOP-FRASER

1st X1 Hockey girls had their first game of the season against Aquinas 1st X1.

They took awhile to settle into the game which was fast and furious. Although Aquinas dominated play for much of the first half Phoebe Robertson made some excellent saves to keep them in the game, the defence only conceding one goal. Second half they were much more composed and confident with some excellent attacks and shots on goal. Ali Kindley delivered an excellent ball into the circle which Chloe O’Neil put between the GK legs. It was exciting to see the new players to the team play with tenacity and determination. Aylish Dunlop, Grace Fotheringham, Katie Templeton, Phoeby Soulsby and Chloe O’Neill all had great games. 1-1 draw.

The 1st XI Boys had a big game against Otumoetai 1sts and scored early with a goal from Lucas Brydon. Both teams were evenly matched and some very skilful, intense hockey was on display. KKC had several chances that weren’t put away and OTC came back in the last quarter to score too goals to win 2-1. The game was directed well by Captain Ethan Fraser and senior players Mike Gilliver and Shaun Coxhead never gave up.

RUGBY

The first competition game of the season took place at home against Rotorua Boys 15A.

With 10 members of the squad missing due to a prior commitment, the team was light on numbers with only 16 available. However every member of the team played their hearts out and the team scraped through without any serious injuries.

Ritchie Vi was the standout player at openside and was everywhere making tackles and supporting the ball carrier. Josh McClean was another player who’s work rate and line breaks rate a mention playing at No 8. Though RBHS scored 27 unanswered points they were made to work for them by some great tackling in the backs from Che Conrad, Amadeus Ruegg and Lesen Huiarangi.

The team should be able to regroup and come out strong in their next game.
