Boardwalk work under way

- Murray Grainger Omokoroa Community Board

Cycleway update

Construction of the missing boardwalk sections and a replacement for the old boardwalk between Cooney Reserve and Tinopaiwalkway should be under way as this goes to press.

Atemporary diversion via Margaret Drive and Tinopai Drive is available for walkers, but the steps at Tinopai are not very cycle-friendly.

Domain and esplanade recreational areas

Council is gearing up to the development of amaster plan for the domain and the esplanade area (including the boat ramp) to deliver on the community’s wishes to see this fantastic area developed.

In the 2017 Omokoroa Development Plan the following Key Actionwas recorded: 35. Ensure recreational use of the esplanade and domain meets the needs of a growing population. How it will be done read, “the esplanade, domain and boat ramp area should be developed to ensure environmental protection, and accommodate boating, junior sailing, swimming, recreational and commercial activities including management of parking and boat trailer congestion.”

It’s quite a big ask, but council is determined to progress this key action.

So they have started with getting some data (from cameras) to show actual use, and have done some user surveys to understand what people value about the area and what they use it for. There has also been feedback through the community plan and council’s long term plan process.

Aworkshopwill be heldwith key stakeholders on May 30 bringing representatives from different user groups together, to problem solve and agree some short term actions and a longer term ‘master plan’ for the area, so that it meets the community’s needs now and into the future.

Following this workshop, public open days will be held to get feedback on the possible short term action and longer term vision— look out for these in July 2018.

If there are small, “easywins” decided on through this process, there are some funds already allocated to undertake such work. If the decision process results in major changes, these may require a longer funding cycle.
