Truckload of trash

Clean and green

Katikati? Think again.

Rubbish discarded from cars driving on

State highway 2 between Tauranga and Katikati can fill a truck.

And it does so each and every month. They fill a truck every time.

Last week the roadside cleaning team from Westlink Bay of Plenty were hard at work picking up the plastic, glass bottles and general rubbish and junk that ends up on the roadside— all of it thrown from moving cars.

The truck was less than 4km from Katikati and rubbish could still be seen lining the grass verge ahead on State Highway 2 as the team drove further on.

The pollution created by those in cars ditching food, plastic bottles and wrappers also represents a hazard to other drivers.

Locals can phone *555 if they see rubbish thrown out the window of cars on State Highway 2, or anywhere in the region.

The Westlink roadside rubbish collection team will be back at work next month and will once again fill a truck with the waste that is casually thrown out the window by passing motorists driving through “clean and green New Zealand”.

The WestLink Bay of Plenty team is responsible for management and maintenance of the Western Bay of Plenty District Council’s local roads, Bay of Plenty state highways and Tauranga city’s state highways.

This team was established on November 1, 2014 in conjunction with the launch of the Bay of Plenty Joint WBoPDC/NZTA One Network Maintenance Contract.
