Waihi

Ladies - With a weather forecast of heavy rain sweeping the region, it was remarkable that few people cancelled their entry in the Ebonysponsored open tournament held at Waihi on Friday May 11, and those that did could well have regretted their hasty action, for the day was cloudy, calm and warm and no rain until later in the day.

The course was in excellent condition, and the greens a bit like cryptic crosswords — great, but challenging until you got the hang of them! For eight years now, this tournament has been sponsored by Ebony Fashions of Waihi Beach, Tauranga, Ngatea, Tirau, and Hamilton, and after golf the assembled players were treated to a fashion parade, with local players Diane Spiers, Adrienne Lynch, Denise McConnon and Glennis Burgess modelling the latest fashions available in the Ebony stores. Players came from Hamilton, Paeroa, Omokoroa, Whangamata, Matamata, Ngaruawahia, Cambridge, Fairview, Carterton, Walton, Maramarua and Waihi, and those not fortunate enough to win a prize at least had a chance to go home with something from the wellstocked sales table.

The competitions were Gross winner over the field won by Carol Leary (Waihi) 79, Nett winners in Division 1 won by Pat Hay (Waihi)

71, and Division 2 Adrienne Lynch (Waihi) 69; Stableford winners Division 1 Heather Sharp (Walton) 36 points, Division 2 Raewyn Wright

38 points.

18 Hole - It was back to the usual rotten weather on Saturday, May 12, with only five women turning up to play Rosebowl stableford competition.

Stableford results: Susan Mustard 33 points; Bev Ireland 31.

Two matches were played: The Spiers Beach cup final with Phillipa Harvey winning against Niria Gerbich on the 14th hole, and in the 1st round Fourball Best Ball match the Kay Marshall and Helen Tidswell combination conceded to Michelle Libby and Kathy Ashton on the 11th hole.

Meanwhile on Monday, May 14 the Bay of Plenty District Association pennant final was played at Omanu, the participating teams of six players from Rotorua, Te Aroha, po¯tiki, Pa¯uanui and Waihi clubs having qualified for this event by winning the series of three Association Interclub pennants held during the past three months. It was a magnificent day for golf — calm, sunny and warm, albeit a bit heavy underfoot after the recent heavy rain. Five nett scores from each team were counted in the final result, and it was close, with po¯tiki and Waihi both in the lead with 382 aggregate nett, forcing a “sudden death” play-off. Sarndra Tiopora ( po¯tiki) and Kay Marshall (Waihi) drew the short straws for the play-off— and they were all square on the first hole, and level on the next until Kay’s great chip into the green past the pin was no match for Sarndra’s which was even better, landing close to the hole giving her an easy putt for a par and the win.

Results: po¯tiki 382. Runners up Waihi 382; Te Aroha 395; Pa¯uanui 397; Rotorua 401. Best nett : Kay Marshall (Waihi), Carol Leary (Waihi), Marion Edgecumbe (Te Aroha) 73.

It was hot and sunny on Wednesday, May 16 — totally different from the forecast showers and possible thunderstorms. (They came later!) There were 34 players in the field including two enthusiastic “newbies”: one who has gained her handicap. Congratulations Melody.

There were some very good scores in the BOP Stableford competition: Diane Spiers 40 points; Avon Gordon, Robin Zinzan 37; Sally Grindlay, Anke Hermannsdorfer 36; Gay Bainbridge, Heather Walker, Mavis Bruce 35; Nan Hoggard 34; Karen Lee 33; Kay Still 31; Margaret Lecky 30.

Soul Player of the Week: Diane Spiers.

Nine Hole - Eda Pipe, Jean Cotterill, Pat Burr and Carole Hambleton represented Waihi in the BOP District Association Nine-hole pennant finals on May 14 at Omanu, with teams of four from Tairua, Rotorua also participating with all scores in each team counted. Winners: Rotorua 151, Waihi in second place 166, and Tairua third with 187 aggregate nett. Best nett : Carole Hambleton(Waihi) 31. Meanwhile persisitent showers on Tuesday, May 15 led to a small field and difficult scoring in the Homelinks Martha nett competitions. Ladies Division 1 nett: Jean Cotterill , Alison Turney 37; Barbara Schrider, Marie Wyatt 39. Men Martha nett: Peter Madsen 31; Terry Paterson 34; Brian Hunter, Maurice Drummond 35.

Men: Willie Lynch 6 up; Kerry Lewis, Bill Tiffin 4 up; Errol Millar, Peter Robertson, Eddie Bruce 3 up; Wayne Gamble, Allen SmithO¯ 2 up; Bob Pipe, Bob Hoggard, Rakau Keno 1 up; Norm Sanderson, Andrew McLennan all square. Twos: Allen Sarjant, Peter Wright on number 8. Ladies: Penny Joyce 1 up; Jenny Gallaugher 1 down; Adrienne Lynch 2 down.

Mens - In the morning John Libby was streets ahead of everyone else with a cracking 44 stableford, followed¯O by Terry Gerbich proving that age is no barrier on 40, Pete Rowe 38 and Alex Teesdale 38. In the afternoon only two playersO¯turned up in the rain. Dave Ingle and Graeme Parkinson both came last or first, depending on how you look at it, but Dave coming less last.
