Civic Choir brings G&S to Katikati
Gilbert and Sullivan comes to Katikati, courtesy of the Tauranga Civic Choir.
On Sunday, August 26 at 3pm, they present a selection of songs from The Yeomen of the Guard, HMS Pinafore, Patience, Pirates of Penzance, The Gondoliers and The Mikado. The choir will mix things up a bit — some solos will be sung by the choir, others by soloists. Quartets will be sung by the whole choir. G and S brings loads of hilarity, pathos and bathos, and political uncorrectness, mild racism and Victorian ignorance of anything not British. All this makes for a afternoon of laughter and frivolity.
Gilbert and Sullivan were Victorian musical and lyrical geniuses who launched the forerunner of the modern musical. An instant success, their operettas brought great tunes and funny lyrics to the world of their time.
They appealed to all strata of society. Under constant pressure to produce, they fought continuously, but still managed to produce a musical genre still popular today.
The 60-strong choir is performing to a new audience.
Great fun is how they describe their rehearsals.
Join in the fun and have a good laugh. Musical director, Nigel Williams will present the show Last Night of the Proms style with a constant flow of repartee between songs.
Tauranga pianist Leon Gray accompanies the choir.
