Academic results ‘truly outstanding’

-

Ben Douglas was awarded 2018 Dux of Katikati College at the school’s annual senior prizegiving last week, honouring the outstanding achievements of its students.

Ben, 17, was described by his teachers as an excellent scholar, “a creative and critical thinker who always assists others with their learning”. Outside of his learning he has been a valued member of the Katikati Primary School Boys Club. This has involved a number of the school’s senior young men supporting boys at the Primary School. He is described by staff as a genuinely nice young man who is extremely humble about his academic success.

Tessa Bradley was awarded 2018 Proxime Accesit (runner-up to dux). National and regional swimming champion Tessa has worked industriously throughout the year making maximum use of every moment in class. She has great personal drive and works cooperatively with peers and independently with confidence. Tessa has already gained 45 credits at excellence level.

The 18 year old was also awarded Dux Ludorum — sportsperson of the year jointly with squash champion Glenn Templeton. Glenn, 17, is New Zealand U17 squash champion, achieved when he was just 15. Tessa has achieved many New Zealand titles in swimming and Surf Life Saving, the highlight being selected in the NZ Junior Black Fins international surf rescue team to contest the World Champs in Australia this month.

Principal Carolyn Pentecost said, “at Katikati College we are passionate about what we do to prepare our students for the ‘real world’. We are dedicated to creating future innovators and we believe our new semester courses and timetable, our innovative Horticulture Programme and the community partnerships will encourage this.

“We want to produce world changing innovators from Katikati, who will be able to claim humble beginnings from our college.”

Board of Trustees chairman Peter McCormick said 2018 had been a very rewarding year.

“Katikati College’s academic results are again truly outstanding and we continue to outperform a lot of the larger more prestigious schools across New Zealand. We are one of only a small number of schools who have improved their NCEA results year-on-year for over five years.”

He said when comparing Katikati against other mid-decile schools across New Zealand, for year 11 NCEA achievement average successes rate across New Zealand is 77 per cent — Katikati College achieved 86 per cent.

“Year 12 NCEA Level 2 average 81 per cent, we achieved 97 per cent. Year 13 average 64 per cent attaining Level 3, we achieved 81 per cent. When I looked at the Ministry of Education’s website yesterday to compare Katikati results to those with other Bay of Plenty schools, we ranked second for NCEA results. This just shows what a wonderful school we have — second in the Bay for NCEA!” Peter firmly believes in many areas Katikati College is leading the way.
