Katikati is the Avocado Capital of NZ — now we are looking for local cafes to stake their claim on the best ‘smashed avocado’ dish in the country.

Katch Katikati’s event coordinator Nicky Austin is launching the Seeka-Best Smashed Avocado in the World competition in December which is open to Katikati cafes only. Nicky is in the process of approaching local cafes to discuss the criteria of the competition.

“Cafe´ owners need to charge it up, pull out all the stops and make it their own signature dish and market it.

“In doing so they may get to claim the title for best smashed avocado dish in the avocado capital.”

Each cafe´ entering will receive a tray of avocados from competition sponsors Seeka Ltd. Judging will be by people’s choice. Diners ordering the smashed avocado dish will be handed a form to be posted in a voting box at the premises.

“This is a chance for people to try smashed avocado, which can be varied, and visit all competition entrants to sample and compare their dishes.”

The competition runs until January 6 with the winner presented a trophy at the Avocado Food and Wine Festival on January 13.
