First show at new theatre space

- By CHRIS STEEL

Excitement is mounting with the debut performance at Katikati’s new performing arts centre — the Junction Theatre — next week.

The old Katikati library in mainstreet has been transformed into a plush theatre at the Arts Junction, with a stage and seating for up to 70.

Katikati Theatre will be the first to test the new multipurpose space performing A Walk in the Woods, which opens on Wednesday. The play combines classic fairy tales in one zany hour and a half show by Debbie Metzler and directed by Eryl Raymond. Katikati Theatre Chairman, Cherie Baunton said they are excited to be doing the first performances in the Junction Theatre.

“The play was chosen as it is a fun show suitable for all ages and a family event before Christmas.”

Katikati Theatre is providing much of the equipment such as lighting and staging, which was needed to furnish the space as a performing arts venue. She said the Junction Theatre is not Katikati Theatre group’s own facility, but is shared with the community.

“We hope to see the space used by other performing arts groups, as well as for cinema and exhibitions.”

Katch Katikati’s Jacqui Knight said the Junction Theatre will be a great asset to the Arts Junction facility and to the community.

“We have kept it (theatre) as flexible as possible so it can be used for exhibition space as well as film and stage.”

The theatre is available for hire with foreseeable uses being musical performances, dance performances, drama, film etc.

Jacqui said it would be great to have a film society or group set up in Katikati to run different films.

“Perhaps themed nights or weekends. Educational film nights or special interest screenings — there are oodles of opportunities for the facility to be used.”

There will be four evening performances on November 28, November 29, Friday, November 30 and Saturday, December 1 at 7.30pm and one afternoon show at December 2 at 2.30pm. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children, from the Katikati Information Centre at the Arts Junction. Cash or cheque only.
