Winning murals now on show
Five murals from the 2017 NZ Mural Contest and Arts Festival have been installed on the back of the giant kiwifruit mural on Talisman Drive.
The murals were painted by artists Crystal Barbre, Nicholas Hudson, Shane Walker, Francis Wregg and the winning one by Kerry and Jack Nicholson. To make up a sixth mural, Open-Air Art Chairman Steve Graveson added a mural painted by Anne Bowling that used to be at the Little Blue House, “as a bit of fun”.
The murals have all been in storage so this is the first time out since the festival, he said.
“The frames are interchangeable so we will move the murals around to keep it fresh. I have other murals stored away that we would like to bring out too.”
The 44 portraits created by children from Katikati Primary School for the festival are also there.
Steve said when they put the kiwifruit mural on that site he knew they had to do something with the back of it to stop people climbing on it and also because it was highly visible it would be a great wall to turn into a gallery, “which is always handy”.
Steve thanked Mark and Erica Rickard from Acumen Construction for a sizeable donation towards the project.
