Women compete at tournament

- By NAN HOGGARD

It could not have been a more perfect day for the Women’s Xmas Open Tournament last Friday nor a more perfectly groomed course that could only have been described as stunning.

There were 85 players in the field from

19 Clubs — Cambridge, Hauraki, Mt Maunganui, Maramarua, Nga¯ ruawa¯ hia, Fairview, Paeroa, Tauranga, Walton,

O¯ manu, Te Awamutu, Waitomo,¯Urenui,

Te Puke, Omokoroa, Te Aroha, Tahuna and Waihi. There was a heavily laden sales table giving a degree of optimism to those who had not scored so well — maybe not many would go home empty-handed, and the two fairies (Jenny O’Dwyer and Kaylene Croker) distributing the goods were to be seen to be believed. The competitions in two divisions were gross over the field, best nett and stableford in each division, then all remaining prizes for stableford runners up, plus minor novelty prizes.

Santa (Earle White) and his helper Elf (Geoff Lee) ho-ho-hoed their way around the course distributing Christmas cake and liquid cheer, which may or may not have had a detrimental effect on some scores, but they were much appreciated, and added to the festive atmosphere.
