Seniors keep up in exercise class

-

Keep on Your Feet (KOYF) classes in Katikati are part of a nationwide programme aimed at supporting older people ‘to live stronger for longer’.

An initiative co-ordinated locally by Sport Bay of Plenty, Katikati’s seniors have embraced the opportunity to work on their strength and balance, participating in the exercise classes that have been held weekly since February.

Katikati instructor Sharnie Riley who is certified to teach both Zumba and Bokwa classes, has been involved with the dance fitness industry for the last nine years. She enjoys working with this enthusiastic group and is impressed with the overall improvement in ability.

“They are just the best students, always keen to give everything a go, whether it’s working with resistance bands, scarves or balls — they are a pleasure to teach. We have a good mix of men and women, ages range from early 60s through to 90s and everyone interacts well.

“It makes me laugh because we’ve ended up with a ‘boy’s corner’ where most of the men tend to sit and a ‘naughty back row’ for our cheekier ladies. One of the regular participants who is a retired photographer — Ron Parkin — turned up to class one morning with his camera and took this photo — Class of 2018.”

Classes for this year have finished. They start again on January 15, 10.30-11.30am at the Catholic Church Hall, 89 Beach Road, Katikati. For more information contact Sharnie Riley on 021 1118617 or visit www.sportbop.co.nz/keep-on-your-feet
