Rubbish collection to change

-

Changes to rubbish collection and recycling in the Western Bay are coming.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council has approved a proposed model for a council-contracted kerbside rubbish and recycling collection service for urban and rural communities.

Council has been investigating alternative recycling and rubbish collection models to achieve better oversight and management of solid waste and recycling throughout the district. The vision is to “minimise waste to landfill”.

It has been considering how to best increase the diversion of material away from landfill and what level of involvement in kerbside waste services council should have.

Council’s identified preferred option is council-contracted services for — pay-per-pick-up service for rubbish (weekly wheeled bin), kerbside glass collection (fortnightly crate), kerbside recyclables collection — cardboard/paper, cans and plastics 1 and 2 (fortnightly wheeled bin) and food waste collection in urban areas only (weekly — smaller bin).

However, this is just a proposal at this point and not a final decision.

Council will be consulting with the community in March/April 2019 and will include other options for comment.

The proposal will be part of the 2019/20 annual plan consultation.
