Hanging baskets go up along mainstreet
Katikati Lions Club membersputup about 155 hanging baskets along Katikati’s mainstreet on Sunday to beautify the town for the summer.
This is the first year the Lions membershave taken over the baskets project as it waspreviously done by the Pakeke LionsClub, which folded in late September.
Eight Lions Clubmembersplus awife of one of themembers, Lucy Vallely, wereon the job early hanging the baskets of flowers outside shops on both sides of the street, fromHammerHardware in the south to the Talisman Hotel in the north.
The flowers this year are impatiens or busy lizzies in a range of colours.
The Lions had help from the Katikati Collegehorticulture students to prepare the baskets and plant the flowers.
Whenthe baskets were up, Lions David Perry and Peter Charlton checked on the watering systems to ensure they were working. The plants are independently watered at6amand6pmdaily. David said because thewatering system has beenup for a while there could be a fewnewleaks.
Ifmembersof the public notice any water leaking from the baskets outside of these times they are asked to contact Peter on 549-0524.
The Lions welcomemore volunteers to help monitor and maintain the flower baskets.
