Wayleggo leads the way, Wayfarer and Weta go well
Afleet of seven yachts signed on for theOmokoroa Boat Club’sNovember 22 event, which wasa short harbour sail aroundMotuhoa Island starting atDmark offOmokoroapoint.
The windwas south westerly and supposed to veer to northwest but it didn’t, and it wassupposed to rain and thunder but that didn’t happen either.
The fleet started at 10.17 and were Against All Odds, Wayleggo, Goldie, Konini, for the keeler division, Wayfarer and Piccaninny for the trailer yachts and Weta, a folding trimaran.
The startwas gentle at first under the lea of OmokoroaPoint but then the yachts caught the breeze whichwas plus 10 knots gusting 15 to 20.
Piccaninny madea brave start butwas soon caught by Konini, Wayleggo, Wayfarer and Weta, Goldie soonwasinthe mix and Against All Odds was down wind.
As they neared the first mark, the big rigs took off, with Goldie not far away. In the lead were Wayfarer and
Weta— all yachtsmadea great sight as they powered down harbour narrowly avoiding the Matakana ferry.
At the turn on to the main Te Puna channel, all yachts had tohardenup and tack after tack, maketheirway upthe channel to Te Puna. Many showedthe benefits of clean hulls and fresh anti-fouling. OnPiccaninny, wewere well back from the leaders and only caught part of the action as were blasted to the starboardmarkoff Matakana Island.
The first yachts were finishing aswe changed headsails for the homeward stretch.
Firsthomewas Wayleggo followed by Goldie, then Wayfarer followed by Konini, Against AllOdds, Weta and finally Piccaninny. Itwas a testing sail and hats off to Wayfarer andWeta for great sailing — well done all.
Thenext event is a shortharbour sail this Sunday, December 6, with briefing at 9.30am.
