Well set-up property has wonderful Coromandel location

- C Scott

Not many orchard properties can offer the superb investment and lifestyle opportunities as this one at 1818 Tairua-Whitianga Rd, Coromandel.

The 37.34ha property is located at Coroglen, just 15km from the popular holiday and fishing destination of Whitianga township and is licenced to produce 11.06 canopy hectares of Sungold G3.

It is planted with predominantly young grafted Sungold G3 yet to reach its peak, as well as 3.37 hectares of Hayward, and is ready for good management to take it to the next level of production. Another 5.37 hectares are planted in Hass avocados, producing around 100 bins a year.

The property is being marketed by Property Brokers rural specialists Brett Ashworth and Ian Morgan. Brett says the property is very well set up with solid Ag beam structures throughout. It is fully irrigated with a near-new river intake structure, is serviced by a metaled central access road and has generous load-out areas. An additional bore services the five bedroom house which is well situated for an orchard manager and is now receiving a spruce-up. The property is just 5km from a major packhouse facility and the orchard’s support buildings include an orchard office, smoko room and three implement sheds. The land has a gentle northerly aspect and a flat contour, with altitude ranging from 7 to 14 metres above sea level.

The Coroglen district has hot summers and mild winters with occasional light frosts. The area often benefits from warm moisture-laden weather events from the north and east, as warm moist air falls as rain in the foothills surrounding the property during summer. Soil is free-draining and fertile volcanic Waihi ash, and fertiliser has been applied annually.

Production History

The property owners have progressively developed additional areas into kiwifruit canopy with planting of Hayward and Bruno and grafting to Sungold G3 over the last several years boosting the overall average production per hectare figures.

The kiwifruit orchard is also capable of early start production and over recent seasons has produced fruit with Taste Zespri Grades from 0.6 to 0.9 and average size of 32-33. Shelter belts are all natural and have been well maintained, and both the kiwifruit and avocados are fully irrigated.

The rapidly-growing Whitianga township provides a full range of professional and commercial services and good schooling. There is a significant number of kiwifruit orchards in the area, with a large pack house facility situated only 5km from the property.
