Packhouse to grow youth
Katikati College horticulture student wins scholarship
James Evans has a long-term goal of working in horticultural research. He has been a top student in Katikati College’s Innovative Horticulture Programme for the last three years and is very soon taking up a place at Victoria University studying for a conjoint Bachelor of Science, majoring in biology and minoring in Science Communications, and a Bachelor of Arts, double majoring in Political Science and International Relations and minoring in Social Policy.
James was awarded the Birchwood Packhouse scholarship at the Katikati College end-of-year senior prizegiving for 2021. He is also the recipient of the Katikati Fruitgrowers Association scholarship.
Over the last three years the packhouse has generously given a scholarship to a high-achieving Katikati College student pursuing tertiary studies in horticulture.
Birchwood Packhouse general manager Karen Roche and director Hugh Morison said, “Birchwood wants to support the Horticulture Programme and Katikati College because it fits our ethos of helping people in our community — in this case encouraging students commit to their education and to a future career in horticulture.”
The scholarship is of mutual benefit to students and to the wider horticulture industry as labour is a huge issue at present and going forward.

James was quick to acknowledge the generous support of Birchwood and also the Innovative Horticulture Programme at the college. He met with Karen and Hugh at the packhouse, who were keen to hear about his plans and asked to be kept in the loop as he progresses along his journey.
James hopes to return briefly from his studies to attend the opening of the new Katikati Innovative Horticulture Centre.
