Extra collections bring waste success

Beach embraces special summer service

-

Abusy first summer of extra kerbside collections in the Waih¯ı Beach area is being hailed a success. Monday, January 31, is the final stop on Western Bay of Plenty District Council’s sixweek extra summer kerbside collection service to cater for the popular holiday hotspots of Waih¯ı Beach, Athenree and Bowentown.

The three areas have had added recycling, rubbish and food waste collections to help communities keep up their waste minimisation efforts, even with an influx of holidaymakers and guests.

Council deputy CEO and group manager infrastructure services Gary Allis says the extra collections have been a great success this summer.

Residents and visitors to Waih¯ı Beach, Athenree and Bowentown have done great work continuing their challenge to minimise waste and have made great use of the additional services.

“We’re really proud of how our communities have welcomed visitors and showed them how serious we are about minimising waste sent to landfill,” he says.

“Now, many of our visitors have gone and we need to get back to our single kerbside

collection on Mondays, with glass and mixed recycling alternating.”

The last special summer kerbside collection is on Monday, January 31 (Auckland Anniversary Day), and the schedule will return to normal on February 7 (Waitangi Day).

To cater for any overflow recycling on these two public

holidays the Athenree Recycling Centre will open both holiday Mondays from 10am-4pm.

Gary says the community deserves a huge pat on the back for how they’ve adopted the new kerbside service.

“And don’t forget you can now add common No 5 plastics to your recycling bin.

“We’re already getting close

to our goal of diverting 1800 tonnes of waste from landfill and doing it quicker than we predicted. We just need to keep up the good work and set a really ambitious goal for the 2022/23 year.”

Under the red traffic light setting there are no changes to kerbside collection services, and people should put their bins out as normal.
