Four locals to play for NZ in Poland

- By Ben Warren

Ayrton Hodson, Luke Spurr, Sean and Daniel Nicholson have been selected in the NZ U20 Ultimate Team. Team Katipo (as the representative team are called) will travel to Poland in August to participate in the World Junior Ultimate Championships.

The boys have won through after attending selection tournaments and training camps in Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton over the past year. It is a real achievement to have four boys selected from Katikati College in the squad of 20.

Selectors considered player development around skills and athleticism as well as a willingness to learn and positivity. From here the boys will continue to develop their skills, agility and fitness and the game-knowledge necessary to compete at a World Championship level.

They’ll now begin a fundraising campaign to raise the $5000-$6000 each needs to get them to the Poland with coach and mentor Peter Besley, who has been the driving force behind their success in this sport.

Katikati College 1st XI had their first outing for 2022 against Bethlehem College, who travelled to Moore Park to play the 1st round of the Gillette Cup qualifiers.

KK 1st XI captain Cameron Pooley would have preferred to bat first but Bethlehem won the toss and chose to put KK into the field. Katikati claimed the first wicket in the 5th over with Ayrton Hodson yorking opener Cooper Hurley for 3 then a run out from Taurian McConnochie and Luke Spurr reduced Bethlehem to 2/14.

Wickets fell regularly, with Cameron Pooley 3/12, Hodson 3/9 and Spurr 2/9 doing the damage to have Bethlehem all out for 105 in just 28.5 overs of the 50-over match.

Notable was excellent keeping from Baxter Anderson, who took 2 very sharp catches behind the stumps. Katikati’s openers saw off the opening bowlers for 5 overs before both were dismissed.

A 51-run partnership between Flynn Warren and Pooley steadied the innings and when Luke Spurr came to the wicket, he and Warren put on a further 43 runs to win the match in just 19 overs. Spurr 27no and Warren 59no. It looks like Katikati will meet Aquinas College in the BOP Colleges finals to see who goes through to the next round of Northern Districts qualifiers. This match will be next Wednesday hopefully at Morre Park, Katikati.
