Vets tee off in season opener

Veterans 2022 opening Life member John Drent was invited to drive the first ball off the number one tee. Play got underway with a teams-offour competitio­n, with the best three stableford scores counting in each team. The winning team on 116 points was Sarah Tomsett, Eddie Bruce, Mark Tomsett and Francis Gascoigne. Second with 110 points were Rosalind Giffney, Kristine Gascoigne, David Croker and Jock Stronach. Ken Purcell scored the only two on the day. Tuesday nine holers In the first round of the Honda Cupnett, division 1, Glen Bennett led the way with 34, followed by Mandy Piper (35). In division 2, Margaret Hickey had a strong 31, with Helen Brady and Denise Morgan on 32. A small field in the men’s Martha Nett was led by Terry Paterson, and John Vautier with 33.

The overall winner of the gross was John Trim (Paeroa) with a two over 74, while Chris Hale topped the field with the best net (68), while the crafty old fox Ron Arthur won the stableford with 39. The intrepid woodsmen,

Pete Rowe and Ted Murray with 37, were the only other two players to better 36 points. Graeme Parkinson swept the pool with the only two scored on the day.

Saturday ladies started their season playing for the Merle Board Salver, and the first of three rounds for the Hazard Cup. The winner was Georgia Mustard, who recorded 67 net. She was followed by Phillipa (68), and Niria Gerbich (69). Saturday men played the qualifying round for the Beach Cup. The leaders were Zac Te Wake (68), John Giffney and Mike Rose 69, Tim Parish and John Eliott on 70.

In the division 1 weekly haggle, John Giffney and Brian Robinson recorded 39, with Tim Parish close behind on 38. In division 2, Jim Evans (37) crept ahead of Desmond Johns, Norm Sanderson, and Jock Stronach all with 36.

In the afternoon haggle, Matt Griffiths and Zac Te Wake both had 40 points, followed by Ian Diver, Charles Pipe and Mike Rose with 39. Jim Powell and Matt Griffiths both registered two twos in their rounds.
