Katikati win despite missing players

Katikati Cricket's senior teams swept their opposition aside on February 19 with dominant performanc­es. All this with several players standing down as Covid contacts

In the Senior Reserves watched the big Gilroy show where Brody and Blake Gilroy opened the bowling and soon had Sangha CC side 49/8 after only 15 overs. Poor shot selection hurt the opposition and the accuracy of the Gilroy brothers did the rest.Brody took 5/26 and Blake 3/25. The tail was cleaned up in a single over with Flynn Warren taking 2/2 and Sangha were all out for 54. The win was cemented by Max Morton 26no, and Khush Joshi 14no, with KK losing three wickets along the way.

Katikati B Grade Mens side travelled to Greerton's Pemberton Park in Tauranga and the muggy afternoon created an absorbing encounter on a bowler-friendly wicket. Greerton reached 40/2 before Katikati's slower bowlers, Rory Mackay (4/14) and Brad Ford (3/17), ripped through the Greerton middle order. The last Greerton wicket of Clint Phelps in his 500th game left Greerton all out for 81. Katikati struggled to make inroads into their target of 82, but Matt Ewans and John Kaczon absorbed early pressure before steering them home.

Katikati Singh X1 contested a topof-the-table clash in the plate group with the Bay Blasters. Another tight match ensued, with the Blasters making 182 off 36 overs. Jithin Karuveli made 58 and Harpal Singh took 4/36. The KK Singhs took the game to the wire, making 185/8 in 32 overs. Karan Joshi (33) and Rashampree­t Singh (39) steered the Singhs to the top.

The Katikati College Premier side posted 208/8 off 40 overs. The team restricted Tga Boys to 66/9 off 21 overs, Fletch taking 3/7 and Ayrton Hodson 2/9 to win by 142 runs.

The Intermedia­te Girls team topped off a great weekend's cricket with a fine performanc­e against the Tga Intermedia­te White Ferns. The Ferns made 68/6 with Natalia Austin taking 2/7 and other wickets to Kendall Young, Shreya Patel and Preet Kaur. These three also performed well with the bat,Preet then hit 26 including a big six. Kendall, 12, and Shreya, 13, helped the team reach 89/3 to win their first game of the season.

Western Bay of Plenty Cricket Associatio­n

Mount Maunganui retained their place at the top in defeating near neigbours Papamoa. The Mount side were removed for 145, before bowling their opponents out for 89. Nick Smith was again in top form with the ball, returning 4/6.

Cadets continued their surge, with a win over United Indians, in retaining the Don Warner Challenge Trophy. Amrit Singh stood out with 53 as his team was bundled out for 117. Daniel Anderton grabbed five for 24. Cadets got the win points on offer with four wickets in hand.

The Reserve Plate competitio­n round four saw Hawks beat Greerton by 49 runs and Aquinas College posting the biggest score of the weekend of 211/6, in defeating Te Puke.

Te Puke Blue kept their Classic Builders Championsh­ip winning record intact, in providing TBC 3rd XI with their first loss of the title race. Te Puke batted first and set the Tauranga Boys side with a target of 165, with the TBC dismissed 25 runs short of the win points on offer.

Rana Virk top-scored with 40 and Josh Espitalier took four wickets. s.

Defending B Grade champions Hawks, proved too strong for PapaOMAs, with a 53-run win. Tony Bieseck took four wickets before top scoring with 36 runs. WBOPCA results February 19
