■ WAIHI GOLF CLUB: Things were fairly quiet playing wise on the course early in the week, as the green keeping staff started their planned greens rejuvenation programme and commenced to verti-drain and soil the greens on Monday morning. After such a lot of player traffic over the summer, and three recent major tournaments, this critical work needed to be done to keep the greens’ to their usual immaculate standard as we head towards the cooler and wetter months.

■ VETS: to help give the greens staff a clear run the Vets had an away day at the Paeroa course, where a stableford round was played in conjunction with some of the Paeroa vets. Another brilliant fine day saw 34 Waihi players travel over, with Jock Stronach (41), and Mavis Bruce (39) the best of the Waihi players.

■ NINE HOLE: A good field of nine hole players played a mixed stableford competition on Tuesday. Although playing on newly soiled greens, the scoring was steady with Margaret Meldrum having the top score of 25 points. She was closely followed by Helen Brady (24), Mandy Piper (23), and Lorraine Meyer (21). ■ WEDNESDAY LADIES: The Wednesday Ladies played the first round of Association Pennants on Monday at Otumoetai who took the day’s honours being on their home course, with Fairview second and Waihi a credible third. The Wednesday ladies also had an away day at the Paeroa course this week, with 24 members travelling over. Surprisingly some ladies had never played the Paeroa course previously. The best of the Waihi Ladies was Jenny O’Dwyer with 39 point, then Dianne Douglas (38), with Tina Berg and Jan Robinson on 37. Well done to Suzanne Burns who had her first ever hole in two on the 6th. The Dreamers player of the week was Phillipa Harvey with a nett 70.

■ THURSDAY MEN: The great weather conditions brought the players out, and a total of 75 players contested the day’s two competitions. In the morning field Tim Parish had the dominant score in the seniors with 40 points, second was Mike Morrison (37) followed by John Giffney, Jim Powell and Allen Smith all on 36. In the junior division Kevin Woods topped the field with 42, with Tom Wallace and Peter Maria well back on 36. Good to see Peter scoring well again after his recent leg repairs.

In the afternoon competition Graeme Parkinson bettered the rest with 38 points, while Jason Baldwin, Jonathan Clare, and also Sparky Bryant finally lit up, to chase Graeme home with 37.
