Club’s new deck becomes reality

New deck to become dining area for club members

- — Bowentown Boating and Fishing Club

The 2014-2015 Bowentown Boating and Sports Fishing Club Committee talked about the future of the club. One thing that was apparent and was most important to the committee was the old fashioned deck outside the club and the deck outside the dining room was never going to be good enough to attract club members and diners to sit and enjoy outdoor dining.

We started a subcommittee to look into building new decks. We have had a lot of people over the time help us. One of the first instigaters was Rex Collins.

He drew up a set of plans that the committee approved. We applied for resource consent and over the years with a lot of liaising with the Western Bay of Plenty Council and regional council over the boundaries we have approval to proceed in the end thanks to a key influence from John Fagan who took this project on as a challenge and a big team of people at the club over the period of 6-7 years.

The new deck will extend out from

the current deck at the front, join the clubroom deck and the dining deck and wrap around the western side to allow diners to sit outside and enjoy views of the Bowentown harbour with the Kaimai Ranges in the background. This will also have a new staircase to provide a safe fire egress from the deck.

We are very proud of the fact that we have Tect and Lion Foundation

aiding us with the cost of the decks. Numerous club members have come forward with monetary donations and donations of time helping with the building.

We wish John Fagan and Greg Watters as project co-ordinaters all the best for the final stages.

We were there on April 3 with local kauma¯tua Roger Tuanau to bless the start of the build.

We were also grateful to have present the club patron Trevor Masters who expressed that this was a magnificent club that he was proud to be the patron.

The club is moving forward through tough times and only with a great committee and hard work that we can make this happen.
