Eden wins gold at jiujitsu nationals

-

Eden Pointon from Katikati College has brought home the gold medal after competing in the New Zealand Jiu Jitsu No Gi Nationals in the school holidays.

The tournament was held on April 23 in Auckland and brought together competitors from all over the country.

Jiu-jitsu is a multi-faceted martial art and combat sport composed of techniques that work towards superior positioning in order to submit an opponent by applying force to a joint or to a chokehold. Technique is emphasised over strength to place an opponent in a controlled position.

During competitive matches, winning is achieved by earning points by placing the opponent in different positions or by forcing them to submit.

The Jiu-Jitsu Federation was founded in Brazil in 1967 and was legally recognised as a sport in Brazil by 1973. By 2010, Brazilian jiu-jitsu was a sport practised and recognised worldwide.

Eden competed in the juvenile women, super-feather division, beating Eva Bailey from Pukekohe in the final.

Ethan Carleton has started his moto-cross year off well with some great results at the North King Country Schools Motocross competition in April. He got third, third, fourth in his races in the 12-13 age group 85cc class, finishing fourth overall.
