Juniors get into swing at tourney
On Sunday, September 24, the Waihī Golf Club hosted the second annual under-19 golf tournament. Thankfully, the overnight wet weather cleared away for the 44 junior golfers to enjoy a fun day, and receive some encouraging coaching. The older juniors also got the chance to play some competitive golf.
After a safety briefing, the younger ones took part in a putting competition and some target golf with tennis balls at various targets. They then went on to play five holes in an ambrose competition.
The next age group of mainly 11-13 years played an 11-hole competition, with the winner being Ollie King, and Flynn Campbell in second place. The eldest group played an 18-hole match in two divisions based on their handicaps.
In the Gold group, Charlie Tawhiti (Maramarua) was the winner of the gross, while Daniella Belford (Windross Farm) won the nett, and Kobe Phillips (Waihi) the stableford. In the Silver division, the nett winner was Caughey Tawhiti (Maramarua), while Archie Kenny (Omokoroa) won the stableford.
Every participant took home a prize and received a drink and hot chips, making for an enjoyable day for all. The club committee organised the day expertly, and it was well supported by Waihī members who accompanied each group around the course.
