GOLF Fairview Nine-hole Ladies

On October 19, the group played our Winter Top 10 Shootout, the scores for this competitio­n accumulati­ng during the winter months. As one of our ladies was unable to play, nine of us teed off hole number two. The winner of the day was Wendy Cocks, second was Carol Fippard and third Maggie Alexander. We all enjoyed being part of this very successful competitio­n. Thanks goes to our excellent referee Rosalie Wrathal and our very competent markers Ros Robson and Anita Kelly. There was a back-nine Stableford haggle for those ladies not in the shootout and the winners were Joanne Carnachan with 23, Debbie Shaw (22), Sandie Knowlson and Naomi Van Der Merwe (19), and Jackie Antonievic­h (18). The hidden hole winner was Debbie Shaw. We had our annual general meeting after our lunch and the new committee was elected.

Fairview Vet Ladies

On October 16, 20 of us played a Stableford haggle on the back nine. Chris Nickel won the day with 22, followed by Sheila Logan (20), Marilyn Payne, Sandie Knowlson (18), and Ann Crawford, Kathleen Grammer, Carol Bones, Melanie Van Burren and Kay Mitchell, all with 17.

Hidden hole winners were Sandie Knowlson, Monique Amor and Kathleen Grammer.

Fairview Golf 18-hole Women

It has been a busy two weeks with weekly golf and our Open Pairs Tournament.

On October 10, the overall winners of each of the six LGU days played for Bev’s Trophy. Congratula­tions to the winner, Merle Mason. The competitio­n of the day was net and Merle Mason was also the winner with 66.

Jill Austin and Helen Turrall were second and third with 69. Fourth was Wendy Patrick with 70, fifth Chris Johnston with 71 and sixth Monique Amor with 72. Terri Heyes had the only two. October 13 was our Open Pairs Combined Stableford Tournament. The winning pair were Cheryl Hobin (Fairview) and Ann Bolton (O¯ manu) on a countback with 74 points. Second were Rae Milne and Diana Price (O¯ mokoroa) and third Jenny Williams and Carol Wilson (O¯ manu), also with 74.

Twos a plenty for Carol Wilson (2), Donna Tumai, Jill Chambers, Chris Chapple, Cheryl Hobin, Jenny Cameron and Waimakarir­i Wyatt. Longest Putt on 18 was won by Dorothy Foster.

Longest Drive on 16 was won by Donna Tumai.

Closest to the Pin on four was won by Kay Buckeridge.

Chris Johnston (Fairview) won the You Travel Trophy for the best Stableford score from a Fairview player.

October 17 was a Stableford competitio­n. The winner was Helen Turrall on 39.

Second was Kay Buckeridge and third was Lynn Cuming, both on 39.

Gayle Nairn was fourth and Carol Bones fifth on 38. Susannah Starkie was sixth with 37.

Wendy Patrick was seventh and Chris Nickel eighth on 36. Sandra Wheeler, Alison Kennard and Chris Johnston all had 35.

Waihī Golf Club

The Waihī Golf Club conducted their annual Two-Person Ambrose Tournament on Labour Weekend on the Sunday.

In perfect weather conditions, the 38 pairs enjoyed a well-presented course, which contribute­d to some good scoring. The format was a net competitio­n, played in two divisions, mixed, and men’s pairings.

The Mixed Division was won by Richard Travis and Karen Flattery with the round of the tournament, a net 59. In second place were Sasha Colbourne and Shane Ward with 61 net, followed by Simon and Lisa Cherry 63. On 64 were John and Alexandra Drent, Paul and Ann Gartner, and Kaylene Croker and Brad Barron.

The Men’s Division was a victory for Dwayne and Nigel O’Flaherty with a net 60, with Mark & Ian Connelley one shot behind with net 61. Sharing net 62s were Rhys Peden and Peter Spiers, and Murray Fraser and Frank Van Hattum. They were followed on nett 63s by Andy Roche and Murray Gutry, Dave Campbell and David Grey, Brian and Luca Benjamin, and Bob and Tony McRae.

Monday vets: on a nice day with a slightly smaller field than usual the Vets played a four-ball, best-ball pairs competitio­n. There was some hot scoring, with Rae Brown and Ken Mustard winning with 45 points, on a countback with Ivan Douglas and Vivian Lilley on the same score. In third place were Jenny O’Dwyer and Daryll Denyer with 44 points, while on 44 also were Neville Jamieson and Dot Ramsey. Three more pairs finished on 43 points. Wednesday ladies: the competitio­n of the day was a Stableford round, where Anke Hermannsdo­rfer won on a countback from Adele

Gunning after they both finished with 41 points. Next was Karen Lee with 40, followed by Jill Morrison with 38. Jane Wordley and Megan Jowsey both had 37 points. This week’s winner of the hidden hole was Megan Jowsey with 10 points. The “Dreamers Player of the Week” was Anke Hermannsdo­rfer (on a countback) with a 67 net. Thursday men: a day with no wind at last, and in Division 1 of the morning net haggle, John Giffney had a clean-up by having a net 64, including the only two, and winning the hidden hole. For the rest, Daryll Denyer, Brian Baynes, and Vince Jones all had net 70s, with four others on 72. In Division 2, Jock Stronach continued his good form by winning with a net 70, While Mark Mora, Harry Shepherd (again), and Tom Rowbotham (and again) all had net 71s. Eddie Bruce had 74.

The afternoon Stableford haggle was a tight contest with Mark Bryant taking the top spot from Mark Hope, with both scoring 39 points. Third was Russell Dewey on 38, while Craig Sandlant and Peter Dagg both had 37 points. All on 36 points were Murray Gutry, Andy Roche, Graeme Parkinson, Michael Hurley, and Peter Bramble. Saturday golf: it was either the holiday weekend, or with the All Blacks playing, but the fields were very small in the morning. The ladies’ morning net haggle was a triumph for Karen Roche with a great 65 net. Next was Kaylene Crocker with 75, the Megan Jowsey and Niria Gerbich with 76s.

The men’s net haggle was won by Daryll Denyer with a net 66, with Jock Stronach, and Allen Sarjant next with 69s.

In the afternoon Stableford haggle Nic Davies sneaked in with the best score of 39 points, one ahead of David Morris. One shot further back on 37 was Richard Taitoko, while the “crafty” Frank Van Hattum, as well as Gary Choat both finished with 36 points.
