WAIHI Waihi places second in annual triangular tournament

- — Rodger Bagshaw

The Annual Triangular Tournament between the Waiihi, Whangamata and Omokoroa golf clubs was held on March 17 at the Whangamata course. It is always a keenly contested event, and great social day, which proved to be the case again this year. With home course advantage the Whangamata Team proved too strong and made a clean sweep of the trophies. The final scores were Whangamata with an average score of 33.36, ahead of Waihi on 32.56, and Omokoroa 32.10. In the Wai/Whanga contest the Whangamata Ladies won by just .06 of a shot, while the Men beat Waihi by 1.21 shots on average.

MEN’S BEACH CUP FINAL: The final was played on Saturday, and proved to be a comfortable win for Daryll Denyer. On the day, in the wet conditions, he proved too strong for Jason Baldwin winning 6 and 5. MONDAY VETS: A good field of Vets played a team game called Pocket Ball this week which proved to be a lot of fun. Individually there was some very good scoring by Anke Hermannsdorfer and Judy Saunders with 42 points, and Mavis Bruce one point back, but it was the team score that counted. The winning team with 40 points was Wendy’s Wonders (Wendy Matutinovich, Jenny O’Dwyer, Andrew McLennan, and Kerry Lewis), ahead of Baynesy’s Mob (Brian Baynes, John Giffney, Adele Gunning, and Des Crene). Entries are open for the Two-Day Vets

Tournament on April8-9. Entries can be made by calling the club on 07 8638678, or on the club website. WEDNESDAY LADIES: The Ladies played a stableford haggle in nice autumn conditions. The day was won by Tamara Morris with a staggering 48 points. There is plenty of run at the moment and the course is in great condition, but to achieve this score is outstanding. Well back with very good 41 points were Dot Ramsey and Diane Lockwood, with Jan Robinson next on 40. The Hidden Hole was shared on 9 points by Dot Ramsey, Mavis Bruce, and Diane Lockwood. “The Dreamers Player of the Week” was Rae Wright with her 66 nett. VETS PENNANTS: On Friday, Waihi hosted the next round of the Waikato Zone3 pennants. With 72 players taking part in this well organised event on a fine day with ideal playing conditions, the Waihi Quartz team were able to extend their lead at the top of the table. The Waihi Ingots, and the Nuggets were both able to improve their positions to 5th and 6th. Allen Smith of Waihi had the day’s best gross of 76, while Adele Gunning (Waihi) had the best nett of 68.
