But have you ever won­dered what’s go­ing on un­der the ground? Try grow­ing some seeds in a jar and watch closely to see what hap­pens. When a seed starts to grow the roots come out first. Can you see the tiny root hairs that grow on the sides? What are they for? Next comes the shoot with leaves and branches. Which way do the roots and shoots grow? Plants are clever. They know which way is up and which way is down! Why do shoots grow upwards and roots grow down­wards?
