How to make a scarecrow

Kids Go Gardening - - Summer -

1 First make a frame. Start with a wooden stake at least as tall as you. Add a cross bar for the arms at about shoulder height. Tie or nail it on to the vertical stake.

2 Dress the frame with old clothes. If you want a fatter scarecrow you can stuff the clothing with old rags, straw or leaves and tie the ends with string.

3 A head is optional, but easy to make by stuffing an old pillowcase or pantyhose. You could also use something like an old soccer ball.

4 Accessorise! Add gloves, gumboots, handbags and hats. Use string or wire, to tie everything on so it won’t blow away. Add an authentic touch by giving your scarecrow some gardening tools - to really fool the birds!
