HOW TO PROPAGATE

-

Propagate hydrangeas from hardwood cuttings taken in winter once the plant is leafless (or equally while you are pruning in late autumn).

With a sharp pair of shears, cut a stem off just below a leaf node, making each cutting 20–25cm long with several sets of buds along its length. keep track of which way is up if there are no leaves to guide you. (note: i have had success with both darker, older wood and pieces that are lighter green with new growth.)

Strip any large leaves from the cutting, but leave any buds or small leaf clusters. if you want to, dip the end of the cutting in rooting hormone. rooting hormone will increase the chances of success but it’s not necessary. insert the cuttings gently into pots filled with potting mix and water.

Keep potted cuttings damp, letting the rain do the watering unless the winter turns out to be dry. new growth in spring is a sign of success.
