POLLINATOR FACTS
• Butterflies are the third largest insect order in New Zealand. • There are 20 native butterfly species in Aotearoa. • aerial spraying, wasp predation and habitat loss have crippled the populations of our native butterflies. • at least three native bee species have a basic social structure, a bit like the introduced honeybee and bumblebee. The rest (25) are solitary, although they may make nests close together.
• The most commonly seen native bees are 18 species of Leioproctus. They look similar to honeybees but are smaller (5–12mm long).
