The Great tomato fight

In the Spanish town of Buñol, the world’s largest tomato-throwing festival takes place on the last Wednesday of August, every year. (Covid-19 saw the 2020 and 2021 festivals cancelled.) The La Tomatina festival involves up to 40,000 people throwing tomatoes at each other! Only overripe and excess produce are used in the event locals see as a way to highlight the significance of tomatoes to the Valencia region. The event brings tens of thousands of people to the small town and is described as the world’s largest state-sanctioned food fight.
