Comfrey Compress
you will need
• Large bunch of comfrey leaves • Knife or scissors
• Food processor
• Paper towel
• Marker pen
• Sealable freezer bag
Method
1. Cut a large bunch of fresh comfrey leaves and break or cut into smaller portions.
2. Place comfrey into a food processor and process until a thick paste forms. (Add a little water if needed.)
3. Place small amount of comfrey paste onto the centre of a paper towel.
4. Fold the towel into a square, as shown.
5. Place a paper towel (or piece of baking paper) on top of this first parcel, so you can form a stack that won’t stick together once frozen.
6. Continue to place paste onto paper towels and fold into squares until all the paste is used up.
7. Put the stack of squares into a sealable freezer bag and label with the date.
8. Place in the freezer and use as required. Will keep in freezer for two to three months.
handy hint
For a range of sizes, the square compress can be cut into smaller shapes prior to being frozen. This can make it easier to treat small injuries, such as those to fingers and hands.
how to use
Take a square compress out of the freezer. Thaw it a little, then place it on the injured area of the body. Wrap a bandage or piece of gauze around the injury to hold the compress in place. The compress may drip a little liquid as you do this, but just wipe it away and continue to wrap. Keep the compress in place for about 20 minutes. Place in the compost bin after use.
For a warm compress: warm up the compress a little in the microwave before using, or wrap a warm wheat bag around the wrapped compress.
For a cool compress: use out of the freezer while it is still cool.
best confined
This potent herb will grow very easily from the tiniest piece of root. Once established in your garden it is difficult to eradicate, so confining it to a large pot is a good idea.
important to note
Comfrey should not be used internally or taken by mouth, as this can be toxic. Comfrey should not be used on open wounds.
