Plant One

Growing my own vegetables was something I thought was so far off my radar that I kept putting it off. Then, I read an article that suggested I start by growing just one type of edible plant. That sounded easy and it immediately took away the stress of growing a big garden.

I chose to grow just basil. I love it in salads and tomato sandwiches. My six ‘Genovese’ basil plants are growing well. I spray them with organic insect spray regularly and feed them with sheep pellets. I have them growing under a fine net to keep the butterflies away. I’m looking forward to making pesto soon!

Next year I think I will grow a tomato plant as well and maybe everything I learn along the way will help me to add more and more items to my garden each year. For me, it’s the perfect way to start as a new gardener.
