Quercus bicolor, the swamp white oak, is a common forest tree in some parts of North America. Here though, unlike other more common oak species, it is quite rare. One (tree 0700) in Memorial Park, Motueka, was last measured at 24.8m high and described as a very large, stately tree. Another (tree 0187) in Hastings, measured 22.6m high. The planting date of the Motueka tree is unknown, but the Hastings one is recorded as being planted by the Williams family around 1910. Earlier, in 1874, steward George Williams, under direction from Hon. JD Ormond, planted hundreds of exotic trees, including swamp white oaks, in what is now Cornwall Park, Hastings’ oldest park, where you can visit them and an impressive collection of other historic trees. –
