The so-called ‘common’ or ‘English’ walnut, Juglans regia, was originally native to south-east Europe, the Himalayas and south-west China, but became widely cultivated throughout Europe and eventually came to New Zealand. Several notable specimens are listed on the New Zealand Tree Register. The tallest (tree 1156), which was 25m high when last measured, is close to the road at 2066 Whanganui River Road, Atene, Whanganui, and was planted around 1843 by the Rev. Richard Taylor. The widest spreading one (tree 0577, pictured), is about 33m across, and can be seen from the road on private property in Conroy’s Road, Alexandra, Otago. It was planted around 1865 and is a protected tree, listed on The Central Otago District Council Notable Tree Schedule.
